The environmental agenda
The Metro – February 3, 2009

The green academy proposal is one of several initiatives Councilor John Connolly recently announced as part of a new environmental agenda he hopes to move forward this year.

Connolly wants to organize neighborhood summits for April around Earth Day that would promote ways individuals can reduce their carbon footprints.

He also called for establishing a “carbon neutral neighborhood program” in which businesses would collectively band together to cut down on waste.

The initiatives follow Mayor Thomas Menino’s ambitious green agenda in recent years, including having the city be the first in the nation to implement ambitious green building requirements.

Boston has also committed to increase recycling, reducing its greenhouse gas emissions 80 percent below 1990 levels by the year 2050 and requiring cabs to be hybrid by 2015.
