The Massachusetts Sierra Club presented a certificate of endorsement for re-election to Boston At-Large City Councilor John R. Connolly.
“I am committed to making Boston the greenest, most environmentally friendly city in the world,” said Connolly. “I am honored to receive the support of the Sierra Club, and I will continue to make environmental protection one of my top priorities, including working for a greener economy and sustainable transportation options for Boston.”
“The Sierra Club is proud to support John’s vision for making Boston the greenest city in the world and his commitment to pursuing an ambitious green agenda,” said Phil Sego, chairman of the Massachusetts Sierra Club’s Political Committee. “John has taken the lead on a number of important environmental initiatives over the past two years, showing a strong commitment to and concern for the environmental issues that affect us all.”
Connolly is chairman of the City Council’s Environment and Health Committee. Connolly currently serves as the only elected official appointed to Boston’s Climate Action Leadership Committee, a task force charged with charting Boston’s collective response to climate change that is supported by the Barr Foundation and the Boston Foundation.
Connolly has also pursued several initiatives as part of his green agenda, including the creation of a public Environmental Science Academy that would set a national standard for how best to prepare children to compete in the green economy and to live a sustainable and environmentally responsible lifestyle.
In January, Connolly proposed a Carbon Neutral Neighborhood pilot program for Boston where a neighborhood that pledges to reduce its carbon footprint will receive help from the city in tracking its energy consumption; finding clean energy products at a reduced cost; and promoting the neighborhood’s business district to the general public.
Connolly has also been an advocate for bringing a shared bike program to Boston and, in 2008, secured a commitment for the city to triple the number of hybrid vehicles being added to its fleet.
